New Orleans officials announced prior to the Saints' first game of the season on Sunday that fans will not be allowed to tailgate on city property.

New Orleans is still under guidance limiting social gatherings, so fans will not be at the game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. NOLA reports, however, that city officials are concerned crowds will gather elsewhere to watch the game and cheer on their team.

"When the Saints play this Sunday, please, please do not go downtown to tailgate," said Shaun Ferguson, New Orleans Police Department superintendent. "Fans are not allowed in the Superdome and for the same reason we will not allow any tailgating on public property."

With the return of football, fans may be tempted to congregate and hold watch parties. However, large gatherings during the pandemic have been linked to an increase in COVID-19 cases across the country. The city's restrictions currently prohibit gatherings outside of more than 50 people and indoor gatherings of more than 25 people.

"Do not put others at risk with large gatherings that can turn into superspreader events," said Mayor LaToya Cantrell.

Cantrell also said that fans won't be in attendance at the Saints' third game against the Green Bay Packers on September 27.
