Kim Kardashian found herself at the center of a social media storm after her shape-wear brand Skims introduced their new maternity line. The outcry was so loud that Kim took to Twitter on Sunday (September 13) to address the situation and defend her decision to launch a maternity line for Skims.
The backlash started making headlines after The Good Place actress Jameela Jamil criticized Kim's new maternity shape-wear line on her Instagram account. Though Jameela didn't reference the KUWTK star by name, her post came shortly after Skims debuted the maternity line. “Lot of talk on the internet today about pregnancy shape-wear. And each to their own. But from the discourse online I will say: I wish we could just normalize just focusing on the inside of a pregnant body, not the outside,”she wrote. “You don’t need your shape corrected or hidden. You don’t need an even more awkward obstacle between you and a piss. You just need to try and ride with this miracle and do your best to be as happy/comfortable as is possible within your circumstances. Pregnancy is hard enough, with enough worries already.”
Following in Jameela's footsteps, Kim addressed the criticism without calling anybody out by name."To anyone who has an issue with maternity solutionwear, and if you haven’t been pregnant before you may not know the struggle of what it’s like carrying all of this weight the way I did along with millions of strong women," Kim began her lengthy response. "[Skims] maternity line is not to slim but to support."
"The belly part doesn’t slim your belly," she continued. "It’s actually sheer and a thinner layered material compared to the rest of the garment. It provides support to help with the uncomfortable weight being carried in your stomach which affects your lower back and the compression on the leggings helps with pain relief caused by swelling. It is also worn after you have given birth and provides the comfort and support that most women need after delivery especially if you are recovering from a cesarean."

Despite the loudness of her critics, Kim wrote that she and Kims have seen a "majority of positive feedback" since the maternity line launched. "I am incredibly proud to provide a solution that will provide comfort and support during the times that we all need it most," she said. "During pregnancy, and after."
Kim got some backup support from close friend Chrissy Teigen, as well, who is currently expecting her third child with husband John Legend. "Hi guys, actual pregnant person here!" Teigen said in a Instagram Story video, showing off her own Skims maternity attire. "Just wanting to show you and maybe talk a little bit about what pregnancy shapewear is.... When you're pregnant and you're sitting down a lot, or on bed rest like me, you tend to just sit there, and if you're wearing regular, basic-ass underwear, all it does is roll inside of folds I didn't even know I had! Most importantly this is not about creating a body we don't know we have," she quipped. "Like, we're not trying to do anything to trick you, we're pregnant."
The new Skims maternity line will be available for purchase beginning Sept. 16.
