Amazon is making way for thousands of new employees, including more than 2,000 openings in Detroit and more throughout Michigan.

That’s part of an additional 100,000 employees Amazon is seeking nationwide and in Canada, which is separate from the 33,000 corporate and technology jobs announced last week, according to an Amazon press release on Monday (September 14).

The announcement comes at a time that many customers are shopping online, especially because of COVID-19, and ahead of the holidays, when the online shopping is likely to ramp up.

“We are opening 100 buildings this month alone across new fulfillment and sortation centers, delivery stations, and other sites,” said Dave Clark, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Operations atAmazon. “We are proud to be hiring 100,000 new associates with pay of $15 per hour or more across those buildings and in our network. Our expansion also comes with an unwavering commitment to safety. Collectively, our new team members have already completed more than 1,200,000 hours of safety training, with over 500,000 more hours expected, to ensure that in addition to fast and efficient delivery for our customers, we’re providing a safe and modern environment for our employees and partners.”

Amazon Vice President of Human Resources Ofori Angola said positions include “pickers, storers, sorters, people who are preparing delivery packages for our customers,” and others.

“The innovation of Amazon all the technology, learning stuff new every day is a great thing that makes you want to come in,” Livonia employee Gregory Moore said in a Fox2 Detroit story.

Amazon also plans to construct a $400 million distribution center on Michigan’s old fairgrounds in Detroit, covering 142 acres. That facility, awaiting final approval from city council members, is expected to open in 2022. Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan previously said the land, valued at $9 million, will come with “no tax breaks or incentives” for Amazon.

Jobs coming to Detroit will start at $15 per hour with benefits and sign-on bonuses, according to Amazon. The company currently has 13,500 jobs throughout Michigan.
