Due to the coronavirus pandemic, many events are looking different in 2020.
The Trail of Lights at Zilker Park may end up being a drive-thru experience this year.
The possible alteration of the "large and important community event" was outlined in an item on Thursday's regular Austin City Council meeting agenda.
Because of the large number of visitors that usually walk through the Trail of Lights, the meeting agenda stated that the event "is not possible, safe or in alignment with protecting the community's health."
In order to make the event compliant with safety standards, the meeting agenda states that "a drive-thru event may be the only safe way for Austinites to enjoy the holiday activities."
If the Trail of Lights becomes a drive-thru event, the holiday display will be extended by 15 days, giving visitors 30 days to see the lights.
About 1,300 cars will be able to drive through the display each night.
The event coordinators still will have to get permission from Austin Public Health and meet the city's special events permitting standards.
According to the City council item, if the Trail of Lights ends up being a drive-thru event, there will be no admission fees.
