For voters, an election in the middle of a pandemic may be a cause for concern. They have to make the choice to either risk their health to vote in person or request a vote-by-mail ballot well in advance. Williamsburg is offering a new option for city voters: curbside voting.
To vote curbside, park in the designated spots outside the Municipal Building and call the Registrar's Office at 757-220-6157. A poll official will then come out to check identification and issue a ballot.
State legislation passed earlier this year no longer requires voters to have an approved reason to vote ahead of Election Day, WAVY reports. Starting September 18, voters can cast ballots in person at the Municipal Building, curbside or in the Registrar's Office, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The office will also be open on two Saturdays, October 24 and 31.
Only four people are allowed in the Registrar's Office at one time. Voters will have their temperatures checked before entering, and facial coverings and social distancing are required. Anyone with a temperature over 100 degrees will be asked to vote curbside.
The city also has a dropbox for absentee ballots outside the front doors of the Municipal Building. Ballots can be sent through the mail as well but must be postmarked by Election Day on November 3, 2020, and received no later than noon Friday, November 6, 2020.
The deadline to register to vote is October 13. Learn more about the upcoming election or check registration here.
