The Dallas Police Department's crime-fighting tool is being expanded to keep communities safe.
The Starlight program was launched by Police Chief Renee Hall in 2019. This program connects private business surveillance cameras for monitoring at police headquarters to "expand the eyes and ears of officers."
Dallas Police announced Tuesday that the new Starlight cameras will be at the following locations:
- Chevron at 2944 North Buckner Blvd
- American Dollar Plus at 9770 Forest Lane
- EZ Trip at 9798 Forest Lane
- Chevron at 9791 Forest Lane
There are currently cameras at 2911 Ledbetter Drive, 11770 Ferguson Road, and 2503 Lemmon Road.
So far, the Starlight program has resulted in a 39.6% reduction in calls for police aid, and a 35% reduction in crime rates.
Dallas Police stated, "The software embedded in the system has the ability to recognize anomalies that might indicate a crime in progress, such as a camera being covered or tampered with, sudden movements by individuals in view of the camera."
The camera have signs and blue lights on them indicating that people are watching them live in real-time to aid in preventing crimes from taking place.
