A Pennsylvania man tragically lost his life earlier this week while attempting to save his daughter from what officials called life-threatening surf on the coast. The incident occurred Tuesday afternoon in Currituck County on the Outer Banks, according to The Virginian-Pilot.

Randall Edwards, spokesman for Currituck County, said the man was "overcome by waves when he entered the water", WXII 12 reports. Lifeguards for Corolla Beach Rescue responded to the incident within three minutes and were able to rescue the man's daughter, who was not injured.

WRAL reports that the man was pulled from the water in cardiac arrest, and was given CPR. In a statement posted to Facebook, Currituck County officials said while CPR was being administered on the beach, the water started rising. Lifeguards, deputies, and bystanders dug a trench to help divert the water away from the crews working on the man. While he was revived at the beach, he ultimately died at a hospital several hours later.

"This is a sad ending to what had been a great example of teamwork and skill," officials said. Dangerous surf conditions are expected to continue for several days, Edwards said, as Hurricane Teddy passes the coast. OBX Today reported that "No Swimming" flags have been flying along the Outer Banks because of large waves.

The names of the man and his daughter have not been released.
