Police are investigating after a collision caused one vehicle to fall off a Norfolk bridge Wednesday morning, sending two people to a nearby hospital for treatment. Norfolk Fire-Rescue said units from the 2nd and 3rd Battalions responded to the "significant" collision.

Firefighters responded to an incident shortly before noon in the 8100 block of Shore Drive after a 911 call alerted authorities of a two-vehicle crash, WAVY reports. One of the vehicles went over the guard rail of a bridge at Shore Drive and Pretty Lake Avenue, falling about 40 feet into a marshy area.

Both drivers were able to exit their vehicles without help and were later transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to WTKR.

Norfolk Fire said cleanup will be more difficult than a typical collision as the one vehicle went over the guard rail of the bridge. Police have said that northbound lanes of Shore Drive will remain closed to traffic while the scene is being cleared, WTKR reports.

The fire department posted photos of the incident on Facebook, alerting those in the area about the road closure. While many expressed their shock, they also sent their well wishes to all involved in the collision.
