The New Orleans Saints are urging Mayor LaToya Cantrell to allow more fans into Sunday's home game against the Los Angeles Charges. Cantrell announced Thursday that the city would gradually being moving into Phase 3 of the reopening plan.

"Following our successful test of our VenueShield health and safety plan las weekend, we formally requested that Mayor Cantrell's office join Governor [John Bel] Edwards in approving our hosting fans with a limited capacity of approximately 25% beginning with our next home game against the L.A. Chargers on October 12th," the team said in a statement. "While we have not received approval at this time, we have been in communication with the mayor and are optimistic approval will be given."

Fans haven't been allowed to attend home games or tailgate outside the stadium due to the ongoing pandemic, but at Sunday's game against the Green Bay Packers, 750 fans were allowed in the Superdome as a "pilot program" test for fan capacity, WDSU reports.

Phase 3 does not include the Superdome, Cantrell said, because of its 74,000 fan capacity. The Saints' request of 25% would come out to around 18,500. According to 4WWL, season ticket holders were told last month that their seats would be on a rotation schedule whenever fans are allowed to attend games again.
