Halsey is asking Bernie Sanders the hard questions.
In an 8-minute video chat, recorded on September 30, the former Democratic presidential candidate and the pop star exchanged their thoughts on America’s most pressing concerns at the moment, including the wealth tax and the issue of greed. Later in the virtual sit-down, the two public figures explain why they’ve endorsed Joe Biden in the upcoming presidential election.
They opened the conversation on the recent presidential debate, which Halsey dubbed as “arguably one of the most frustrating pieces of television that I've ever had the misfortune of witnessing,” comparing it to “a reality television show, to which Sanders replied, "It certainly was not one of the great moments in American history.”
The “Colors” star also spoke about her “underprivileged” upbringing in a “lower-class family,” and added that, although she’s “part of the one-percent” now as an adult, she still supports the wealth tax.
"There is no amount of money that I think is worth personally contributing to the alienation, the disenfranchisement of millions, hundreds of millions of people across this country,” she said. “Which is why despite being in the one percent, I support the wealth tax. Because I believe that the people who oppose it are motivated by greed."
“Greed is an addiction,” Sanders concurred. “And the insanity of it is that there are people out there who have billions of dollars … and they’re prepared to cut social security and Medicare and Medicaid in order to have billions more.”
“What we need to do is say to the people on top, ‘Sorry, got half of a million people who are homeless, we have kids who are hungry. You are not going to have billions and billions and billions while so many people suffer.”
The conversation ends on Halsey asking Sanders if he believes the Biden administration is going to “protect marginalized communities,” to which he responded, “Biden has a great deal of empathy as a human being. … He is more than aware of the suffering that is taking place in our country right now.”
