Another San Antonio holiday tradition is being put on hold this year because of the pandemic.

The San Antonio River Walk Association and the city announced on Tuesday that the Ford Holiday River Parade is canceled.

"Needless to say, we are beyond heartbroken, but have exciting plans in the works," said Maggie Thompson, the executive director of SARWA.

The parade would have taken place on November 27, the day after Thanksgiving.

Thompson said that the parade was paused because of concerns over crowds.

“Even though it’s a River Parade they crowd, they congregate and they’re shoulder-to-shoulder three deep so it’s a really big concern,” Thompson told KSAT. “We want to keep San Antonio residents safe."

Virtual events are planned for the rest of the year, such as a virtual walk/run and a social media Halloween costume contest.

The holiday season will not be the same this year in San Antonio because the ice rink won't be returning to Travis Park either. Last week it was announced that the Raul Jimenez Thanksgiving Dinner won't be taking place in person at the Convention Center, and the nonprofit behind it will focus on delivering meals to those in need.
