Eddie Van Halen, the legendary guitarist and co-founder of Van Halen, has passed away at 65 after battling throat cancer.

“I can’t believe I’m having to write this, but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, has lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning,” Wolfgang Van Halen wrote in a statement.

“He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I’ve shared with him on and off stage was a gift. My heart is broken and I don’t think I’ll ever fully recover from this loss. I love you so much, Pop.”

TMZ report that Van Halen passed away with his wife, son and brother by his side at St. Johns Hospital in Santa Monica. The publication claim that doctors discovered his throat cancer had moved to his brain and other organs, and his health massively deteriorated during his last 72 hours.

Rest in Peace, Eddie.
