Working as a staff member for the Royal Family sounds like it'd be a pretty stressful job. According to a new book called Long Live the Queen! 13 Rules for Living from Britain's Longest Reigning Monarch, however, royal expert Bryan Kozlowski reports that Queen Elizabeth is actually a pretty chill boss.
In his book, Kozlowski writes that one of the perks of being a member of the royal staff is having access to a "subsidized staff bar at the Palace with dirt-cheap gin and tonics and other bevys daily up for grabs." He adds: "By decree of the boss lady at the top, kicking back with a well-deserved tipple is practically a human right."
While having a staff bar is definitely a work perk, there can be some downsides to drinking at the office—like being discovered passed out drunk by Her Majesty. "The Queen is said to turn a relaxed eye away from members of her household who occasionally overdo it on the sherry and shenanigans themselves," Kozlowski explains. "Like the time Elizabeth supposedly found a drunk servant sprawled at the bottom of a staircase. Without putting a pearl out of place, she merely requested to anyone within earshot, 'Would someone please come and pick Frank up, I think he's a little under the weather.'"
If this sounds like your dream job, it's not impossible to work in the palace. The House of Windsor posts job listings like any other business. Just last year Queen Elizabeth was on the hunt for a full-time "Liveried Helper" to assist with her horses. The best part of that gig? You got to live on the palace grounds, as well. That definitely makes it easier to get home after imbibing at the staff bar.
