The University of North at Carolina Chapel Hill will reportedly be limited to single-occupancy dorm rooms when students return to campus for the 2021 spring semester.
The decision comes after the university ended in-person classes shortly after the beginning of the fall semester due to a spike in COVID-19 cases, ABC 11 reports.
Carolina Housing held meetings on Wednesday to discuss the best options for the spring semester, which led to the decision to include single-occupancy dorms, allowing 3,900 students to return to campus in the spring, according to UNC's student newspaper, the Daily Tar Heel.
Campus leaders said the decision has not been finalized because public health guidance could alter plans once the spring semester begins, ABC 11 reports.
The announcement comes on the same day parents of Franklin County Schools students are expecting to learn whether their children will return to the classroom. The county's school board is scheduled to hold a meeting on Thursday night to discuss whether the district will transition into Plan B, which would allow in-person classes with increased social distancing and no more than 50% capacity, as well as limiting buses to 33% capacity, ABC 11 reports.
Franklin County Schools is set to continue holding remote classes until at least October 23.
