The 2021 Miami Marathon was canceled due to coronavirus concerns, Local 10 reported. Event organizers announced Monday (October 12) that the Life Time Miami Marathon & Half Marathon and the Life Time Tropical 5K were not happening as the COVID-19 pandemic continues. The Miami Marathon was originally scheduled for January 31, 2021, while the Tropical 5K was supposed to take place on January 30.
"Believe me when I say we are devastated," Frankie Ruiz said, a co-founder and co-creator of the events. "This will be the first time we are unable to host this event since its inception in 2003, however the health and well-being of our running community is of utmost importance." Even those these events are canceled, Ruiz said there will be a virtual event in its place. Details will be announced "soon."
People who were registered for the events will be getting emails Monday (October 12) with four options, according to their website. They can either defer their entry to 2022 events, participate in the alternative virtual event, get a refund for their registration fee, or donate their registration fee to Miami-Dade County Public Schools via the Life Time Foundation. Some other events in South Florida have revamped with safety measures to curb coronavirus spread.
