Texas is best for working from home. At least that's according to a study ranking the best and worst U.S. cities for remote workers.
Telecommuting has taken off since the start of the pandemic, and around 42% of the U.S. labor force is working from home, according to a Standford economist.
The company LawnStarter compared major U.S. cities and suburbs and gave them a rating for their opportunity and earning potential for telecommuters, work environment, connectivity and convenience, and costs.
The top 10 cities are
- McKinney, Texas
- Frisco, Texas
- Plano, Texas
- Irving, Texas
- Garland, Texas
- Yonkers, New York
- Austin, Texas
- Fort Worth, Texas
- Dallas, Texas
- Orlando, Florida
The Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex is the clear winner here. DFW cities had high rankings for the availability of personal workspace and co-working spaces under the work environment category. It also picked up points in the connectivity and convenience category for its fast internet speeds; Frisco and McKinney had the two highest average internet speeds.
DFW's suburbs ranked higher than either Dallas or Fort Worth because of their lower cost of living. High costs of living is one of the reasons why cities in California didn't show up in the top 10 despite Silicon Valley being the center of the tech universe.
A number of other Texas cities made the top 50. They are Arlington (#14), San Antonio (#23), Houston (#29), Lubbock (#38), El Paso (#40), and Corpus Christi (#49).
