Anonymous Twitter Account Calls Out ASU, Students On COVID Policy

An anonymous Twitter account is keeping tabs on which student party will become the next super spreader event at Arizona State University.

ASUcovidTracker (@as_ucovid) shares TikTok videos of students partying and photos of sorority members not social distancing along with the weekly COVID-19 numbers to "show where ASU is failing to respond on COVID," the Phoenix New Times reported.

ASU was one of the first major universities in the country to allow all of its students back on campus for the fall semester. The university didn't release the number of student coronavirus cases or where the students contracted the virus, so the anonymous watchdog-style Twitter account was created to fill the information gap and "create a community that is more informed and safer from this virus.”

The Twitter account creator hasn't identified himself, but The Daily Beast reported that an ASU student who's a Tempe native is running it. The student is remaining unnamed because of backlash from the university.

ASUcovidTracker shares tips from fellows students about off-campus parties, what's it like for those quarantining in their dorms, and even possible outbreaks at Greek houses. The account owner said he doesn't want to spread misinformation and tries his best to verify tips before sharing them, but he's been criticized for causing a panic in the ASU community.

He also blurs the faces of students in videos because he doesn't want to shame them.

“I just wanted to hold the university accountable in a way that I didn’t see happening," he said.
