Nearly 40,000 Arizona residents will receive $50 to $150 gift cards or checks as part of a $5 million settlement between the state and Honda.

The Arizona attorney general sued Honda because the company did not adequately warn drivers about the defective Takata airbags inside their vehicles before 2012. Seventeen people in the U.S. were killed by the exploding airbags, including two people in Arizona. The most recent airbag-related death was in Mesa on August 20.

As part of the settlement, around 15,000 Arizonans will receive $100 checks if they purchased a Honda or Acura with a recalled Takata airbag from September 1, 2012 to November 3, 2015, ABC 15 reported.

Another 40,000 Arizonans will be mailed either a $50 or $150 gift card depending on their vehicle, tucson.com reported. There is a catch though. The gift cards can only be activated by a Honda dealership after the driver gets their airbag replaced. Replacements are free, and the gift cards are being sent as incentives so that drivers will replace the faulty airbags.

Honda also agreed to pay the state $500,000 and spend another $750,000 on customer outreach.

Acura and Honda owners can go to https://hondaairbaginfo.com/ or call 888-234-2138 to check if their vehicle needs to have the airbags replaced.
