A South Florida lawyer was taken into federal custody in connection to several robberies or attempted robberies of local banks, NBC Miami reported on Wednesday (October 21). FBI officials said Aaron Honaker, 41, was arrested Tuesday night (October 20) as he was trying to enter a Coral Gables bank. He was admitted into practice law in the state in January 2008, according to the Florida Bar. Honaker previously worked for a firm in Coral Gables, as well.
A detective spotted Honaker while in the downtown area, saying the lawyer matched the description of the bank robbery suspect, according to Coral Gables police. FBI officials also claim the lawyer was involved in robberies and attempts dating back to at least September 30, when he allegedly robbed a Citi bank branch at 396 Alhambra Circle in Coral Gables.
According to a complaint affidavit, Honaker had a specific approach to his robbery attempts. The 41-year-old would walk up to a teller, ask for help in making a withdrawal and then pass a handwritten note to the teller. These notes would say messages like, “don’t touch the alarm or call the police,” “empty all of your $50s and $100s and put it in an envelope,” and “keep calm, and give me all the money in the drawer, I have a gun.” He would take the note with him when he leaves the bank.
Officials said "other incident were reported at the Chase bank at 20880 Biscayne Boulevard in Aventura on Oct. 3, the Well Fargo at 2555 Ponce De Leon Boulevard in Coral Gables on Oct. 5, the Chase at 355 Alhambra Circle in Coral Gables on Oct. 19 and the HSBC at 2222 Ponce De Leon Boulevard in Coral Gables on Oct. 15.," according to NBC Miami. Honaker is expected to make his first appearance in a Miami federal court.
