The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo’s newest addition needs a name, and you can help decide what it is.
Proud parents Bo and Jhasmine welcomed a 150-pound, six-foot-tall baby boy on October 13.
Now, the zoo needs a name for its newest giraffe.
The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo introduced a way for visitors to help pick a name while supporting worldwide giraffe conservation efforts.
People can vote for a name online or visit the zoo’s Welcome Center to weigh in and make a donation to help conservation programs. The zoo has a partnership with the Giraffe Conservation Foundation to help protect the animals.
“The pandemic has had wide-ranging impacts on our world, including on many of our conservation partners we support abroad that help protect vulnerable species like giraffe,” Dr. Chris Kuhar, Executive Director of Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, said in a statement. “By helping us name our newest giraffe calf, you are also supporting our conservation partners in their efforts to protect giraffe populations in Africa."
The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo offers three names to choose from, each unique to the giraffe’s native regions of Africa, according to the zoo.
Here are the names, and what they mean:
- Kendi (loved one)
- Nuru (light)
- Zuva (day/sun)
