Hate is such a strong word, especially in today's divisive climate.

There are many regional rivalries between states that date back to years ago, mostly fueled by sports rivalries.

However, states get hated on by their own residents as well.

Best Life calculated the percentage of the population that has recently moved out of each state. In addition, they analyzed a poll of citizens that felt the most pride in their home states as well as a poll of 320,000 Instagram users that determined which state they hate the most.

According to the study, Texas was the second most hated state in the country with a hatred index of 758.

Best Life stated that Texas is most hated by Alaska, California, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. The state has a two percent population change compared to the US average and has a state pride score of 68 percent.

The most hated state on the list was New Jersey with a hatred index of 818. New Jersey is most hated by New York, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut, and it has a population change of -0.3 percent in comparison to the US average.

Rounding out the top five most hated states are California, Oklahoma, and Florida in third, fourth, and fifth places, respectively.
