An elderly couple was able to escape a massive fire that destroyed their Bay Harbor Island home, according to Local 10. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews responded to the scene Friday morning (October 23). The first floor was engulfed in flames, and heavy smoke billowed out of the home. Investigators found the elderly couple sitting outside the home as they waited for crews to arrive. “They could have been hurt badly. All of his body was black,” neighbor Gerardo Feterman said.
Feterman said he saw "really, really massive" flames coming out the roof and through second floor windows. “I came outside and I saw all of the flames and I was shaking,” Ligia Lustgarten said, a longtime friend to the couple. The pair was taken to the hospital as a precaution. They're expected to be okay. Seventeen units total were on the scene, quickly trying to get the fire under control. Witnesses called it a scary experience. Fire investigators are still working to find out the cause of the large blaze.
Last week, 13 people suffered burns after a boat went up in flames in Fort Lauderdale. The people gathered on the boat to film a music video on New River.
