More Than 200 COVID-19 Cases Reported In Massachusetts Schools

The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has reported more than 200 COVID-19 cases among students in the past week.

The department's latest data released on Thursday shows Massachusetts school districts reported 202 total cases in schools, which includes 129 cases among students and 73 among school staff members during the week of October 15-21, CBS Boston reports.

The department began reporting cases on September 24 and has since released data during each of the past four weeks. Since then, a total of 621 total positive COVID-19 cases in schools, which includes 388 students and 233 staff members.

The report shows the number of cases among students who have been attending classes in hybrid or in-person models, but does not include students strictly taking virtual classes. The state of Massachusetts estimates about 450,000 students and 75,000 staff in public schools have returned to the classroom. Metheun has reported seven cases -- which is the most among Massachusetts districts -- and Lincoln-Sudbury has reported six, according to the Boston Herald.

On Friday, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health reported 144,895 total cases of COVID-19, which includes 968 newly reported cases.
