With Election Day just around the corner, voters are preparing to head to the polls and make their voices heard. But did you know that Tennessee has certain rules that voters need to follow in order to cast a ballot? Here's what to know before going to the polls.

Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, 2020. The voter registration deadline has already passed, but voters can make sure the are registered at this website. Election sites and hours of operation for the polls can be found through GoVoteTN or by contacting your local county election commission office.

With the ongoing pandemic, some voters may be apprehensive about going to the polls, but election sites have adjusted to create a safer space that allows for more distance between voters. Though not required, facial coverings are recommended as an added layer of safety. Election officials have created a video explaining what residents can expect when they go to vote this year.

All voters are required to present a federal or Tennessee ID with their name and photo, such as a driver's license or U.S. passport. They will not accept college student IDs or those not issued by the federal or Tennessee government.

Voters should also be mindful of what they wear to the polls. Have you ever driven up to your polling location and noticed a line of candidate signs marking your path before coming to an abrupt stop? This is because people aren't allowed to campaign within 100 feet of voting sites.

Similarly, clothing, accessories, and other items affiliated with candidates or political parties are not allowed inside voting sites. If a voter is wearing anything of the sort, they will be asked to leave and return when they no longer are displaying the prohibited items.

In addition to the presidential election, Tennessee voters will choose a candidate to replace longtime U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander. Voters will also choose who they would like as their district representatives in Congress and several other local offices and propositions.
