The woman’s ashes stolen from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport earlier this month have been recovered and returned to her family.
Doris Morren, of Northfield, died earlier this year at age 92. Her family flew in to Cleveland from California on October 17, planning to hold a memorial service for Mooren on October 19. She wanted to be buried in the same Northeast Ohio cemetery as her mother.
But when the family arrived in Cleveland, they discovered that their luggage carrying Mooren’s ashes was taken. Harold Karaka, Mooren’s son-in-law, previously explained to News5Cleveland that American Airlines confirmed that the suitcase was scanned and arrived on a flight around 7 p.m. that evening.
The missing luggage carried Mooren’s ashes and her death certificate.
"If they could give it back, we'd be most grateful," Karaka said at the time the suitcase was taken.
The Cleveland Police Department released a photo of two individuals believed to have taken the luggage and “fled the scene using the RTA train,” according to police.
19News reported that the family confirmed Wednesday (October 28) that the suitcase was returned. The female suspect is now in a treatment facility, but the man hasn’t been located yet, according to the station.
