A 25-year-old man from Wisconsin is facing murder charges for allegedly beating his grandfather to death with a hammer over a crime he committed decades ago. Charles Luitze, 70, was convicted of child sex assault in 1991 and was forced to register as a sex offender. When his grandson, Bryan Luitze II, learned about the crimes he committed, Bryan struggled to come to terms with his grandfather's dark past.

Bryan, who was not even born when his grandfather committed the crime, became increasingly angry over it. According to Kenosha News, Bryan had spoken to a relative and said he was considering "taking him out."

"How can you forgive him?" Luitze asked, according to the criminal complaint.

"Jesus, he paid his debt to society, and it has been a long time," the relative said he told Luitze. "It's been a long time, and it's over."

According to the police report, Bryan disguised himself as a census worker and went to visit his grandfather at his home. Charles did not recognize his grandson and told a friend that the visit had spooked him. He felt something was off because the worker did not have identification.

A few days later, a neighbor called 911 because they had not heard from Charles. When police arrived, they found Charles' body on his bed covered in blood. The hammer used to kill him was still embedded in his face, with the handle pointing to the door.

"It's a particularly chilling homicide," Assistant District Attorney Andrew Bergoyne said. "The mechanism of murder here with the hammer blows bludgeoning the victim in the middle of the face is noteworthy."

Luitze was taken into custody a few days later on a probation hold for a previous conviction. He remained locked up while authorities investigated the gruesome murder. Investigators found a blood-stained backpack in Bryan's home and matched the DNA to Charles. On Friday (October 30), Luitze was formally charged with first-degree intentional homicide.

He is being held on a one million dollar bond.
