After a nearly six-month rebranding process for New Orleans' oldest brewery, Dixie Beer has chosen a new name: Faubourg Beer. The name will represent the history of New Orleans, paying homage to the diverse neighborhoods in the Crescent City.
"When the team embarked upon this journey in June, we understood that our new name must encompass the spirit and diversity of all of New Orleans' unique neighborhoods," majority owner Gayle Benson said in a statement. "The Faubourg Beer Company is a celebration of our city, our people, and our commitment to New Orleans."
According to 4WWL, the French word "Faubourg" used to describe New Orleans neighborhoods. The name replaces the controversial term "Dixie," long associated with the Confederacy. Over the summer, the company launched a campaign asking for the public's help in choosing a new name.
"We took a deliberate approach to the name retirement and rebranding process," said General Manager Jim Birch. "Our products have always brought people together, and we believe, like so many others, that 'Faubourg' is a unifying name that celebrates every corner of New Orleans."
In January, the company opened a new brewery location in New Orleans that also includes a small museum displaying the history of its beers. The owners hope to expand this in the future to include more about the city's history and brands.
"When my husband and I acquired Dixie Beer in 2017, we recognized that we were investing in more than a brewery, we were investing in a strong and resilient community," said Benson. "Our investments in New Orleans East will continue and bringing jobs and economic opportunity to our community will remain at the forefront."
