Democratic Senate Candidate Mark Kelly Holds Election Night Event In Tucson

Democratic nominee and retired astronaut Mark Kelly won the Senate race against incumbent Republican Sen. Martha McSally. This is according to the Associated Press.

Kelly, the husband of former member of the United States House of Representative Gabby Giffords, won with 53% of the votes tallied as of midday Wednesday. This equates to 1,444,645 votes as opposed to the 1,300,119 that Martha McSally received.

McSally's campaign released a statement following the report. The campaign said, "Hundreds of thousands of votes have still not been counted. Every Arizonan deserves to have their voice heard and vote counted. We continue to monitor returns. The voters of Arizona decide this election, not media outlets."

U.S. Sen. Kyrsten Sinema stated, "I am confident Mark will uphold the Arizona values of seeking common ground and putting country above party. I look forward to partnering with him to cut through Washington dysfunction to deliver for everyday Arizonans, and I thank Martha McSally for her service."

Campaigning for both candidates did not come at a low cost. According to NBC News, around $9.3 million was spent between the two candidates on TV and radio advertising.
