The Sunshine State made some historic moments on Election Night. While some incumbents were unseated, others retained their position in districts affecting Miami-Dade and Broward counties. Voters also made their voice heard on the topic of minimum wage in Florida. Below are all the key takeaways from the South Florida and state races:

Daniella Levine-Cava makes history in Miami-Dade

Daniella Levine-Cava defeated Esteban "Steve" Bovo in Tuesday's run-off to become Miami-Dade County's first female mayor. The county has not had a new mayor since 2011 when former mayor Carlos Gimenez took office.

"There’s nothing radical about the county caring about its citizens and spending its money... In the end, we are responsible for the well being of all our residents," Levine-Cava said. She is scheduled to take the oath of office in two weeks.

Gimenez claims victory in congressional race

Carlos Gimenez (R) won in the race for Florida's 26th Congressional seat. The former Miami-Dade County mayor defeated incumbent Debbie Mucarsel-Powell with 100 percent of precincts reporting Wednesday morning (November 4). Gimenez had 52 percent of the vote, while his Democratic opponent had 48 percent.

"I’m going to roll up my sleeves and I’m going to work with our colleagues to bring solutions, bring result, to the people of Miami-Dade and also the people of this country," he said. He also vowed to work with both parties for the district, which includes parts of Southwest Miami-Dade as well as the Florida Keys and the Everglades.

Gregory Tony remains Broward's sheriff

Gregory Tony is still Broward's top cop after securing 64% of the vote, according to Local 10. Tony was appointed to the position by Gov. Ron DeSantis after former sheriff Scott Israel was ousted. He defeated Republican H. Wayne Clark and Charles E. Whatley, who was running as a non-party affiliate.

“I am honored that voters in our community have chosen me to continue to lead the Broward Sheriff’s Office," Tony said. "While I’m thrilled with the progress we’ve made in the last two years... there is still much to be done. Tomorrow, the work continues, and I will never stop working to keep this community safe, and to making BSO the best public safety organization in the nation.”

Clark said the fight is not over, pushing back against the results. “What I’m fighting for is to make sure that the citizens of Broward County get to to elect the sheriff, and not the governor gets to appoint someone else," he said.

Here are a couple other notable moments:

Republican Maria Elvira Salazar unseats Democratic incumbent Donna Shalala for the 27th Congressional District.

Shevrin Jones became Florida's first openly gay senator. He represented parts of Broward County in the Florida House of Representatives since 2012.
