Two teenagers were acting out a rap video in South Florida last month when a fatal gunshot was accidentally fired.
Jonathan Batista and Brian Shakur Meridor, both 18, were staying at another friend's apartment in Hialeah on October 22, according to the Associated Press. While simulating a rap music video, Batista accidentally shot Meridor in the chest.
When police arrived at the scene, the other friend was applying pressure to the gunshot wound on Meridor's chest.
The arrest report by Hialeah Detective Wilber Gonzalez did not specify what song or video the friends were recreating.
According to Gonzalez's report, Batista "spontaneously" told one of the officers that the shooting was an accident and that "the gun wasn't supposed to work."
The gun belonged to the renter of the apartment, 18-year-old Andres Otaiza. He was charged with possession of a stolen firearm as the gun had been reported stolen from a car in Broward County back in December.
Batista is currently free on bond while he awaits trial.
"We are all shaken by the tragic incident that occurred last week and our hearts go out to the family of the young man who lost his life in this horrific accident," said Batista's defense lawyer, Eric Matheny.
"Jonathan and his family offer their deepest condolences," he continued. "We are prepared to address the criminal charges against him and ask that the privacy of the Batista family be respected during this very difficult time."
Batista is scheduled for arraignment on November 20.
