Texas has some towns with some pretty unique names.

The Lone Star State is home to five major cities including Houston, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, and El Paso that seemingly everyone knows the name of. There are definitely some smaller places, however, that some have never heard of and might not even believe exist.

Here are seven Texas towns with weird names:

Kermit

With a population of 5,708, Kermit was actually named after Kermit Roosevelt, the son of Theodore Roosevelt. The town definitely does a great job at paying homage to our little green friend, Kermit The Frog, as well. The city's water tower is decorated with a Kermit The Frog theme, and there is even a road named "Kermit The Frog" Boulevard.

Jot 'Em Down

This northeast Texas town definitely has a unique name that comes from the name of a fictional store in the Lum and Abner radio show. It's been inhabited since the late 1800s, however in 2019, the population was estimated at only 907 people. With the highway department using the name regularly, the name for the area has stuck to this day.

Blessing

This town was established in 1903 when Jonathan Edwards Pierce bought his own land to start a new town. He originally wanted to name the place "Thank God," but postal officials turned him down so he settled on Blessing.

Ding Dong

It's okay to laugh at this name, we all know it's funny. This town was founded in the 1930s by Zelis and Burt Bell. A painter was hired to paint a store sign owned by the two. He jokingly painted two bells with their names, and underneath the bells was "Ding Dong". The town has been known by that name ever since. Today the town is small, but it is definitely still around.

DISH

Make no mistake, it's DISH, not Dish. This town was renamed in 2005 after the DISH network. In exchange, the town received a decade of free satellite tv from DISH Network.

Bacon

The city of Bacon might be hard to find on a map because is located inside another city. The deliciously named Bacon is located within the city of Wichita Falls in Wichita County.

Telephone

This small town in Fannin County got its name after playing a name game. According to the Texas State Historical Association, Postal Officials repeatedly refused the name of this town because the names were already taken by other post offices. A local general store owner, Pete Hindman, submitted "Telephone" and it worked.

Honorable Mention:

Woman Hollering Creek

This isn't a city name, but it was just too good to pass up. According to My San Antonio, the name has a dark origin. Allegedly, a pioneer family lived near the creek and was attacked by Indians. Seeing her husband killed in a brutal manner, the mother drowned her children to save them from the painful death. When the attackers found the mother, she scared them off with a loud scream. Legend has it that her shrills can be heard by the creek to this day.
