Volusia County deputies were able to identify an 18-year-old man accused of shooting a teen girl in the leg by using his posts on Instagram. The records show he was also wearing a GPS ankle monitor at the time of the crime.
On Wednesday morning (November 4) police responded to a Deltona shooting on Hancock Drive in which a 17-year-old victim had been shot in the thigh. The victim underwent surgery and is expected to make a full recovery.
According to an arrest report obtained by Click Orlando, neighbors told deputies that they heard gunshots and witnessed a man shooting at the victim's home and then quickly getting away in a white four-door sedan.
They also spoke to the victim's siblings and learned she climbed out of her window to meet someone and they heard shots being fired shortly after.
After speaking to the victim, detectives learned that she had been messaging a person on Instagram with the username "mgm rosko" to buy marijuana. When the person met her in her driveway he pointed a gun at her. She said she threw her money at him and ran but the suspect kept firing and hit her in the thigh.
By looking through the "mgm rosko" Instagram account, detectives found photos of the possible suspect standing by a tombstone with the name "Lucille Mills."
Detectives searched for the name on the tombstone in the Driver and Vehicle Information Database and found an address in Sanford. Also associated with that address was 18-year-old Robert Johnson III, who matched the person seen on the "mgm rosko" account.
According to detectives, Johnson is believed to be affiliated with a gang in the Sanford area. At the time of the shooting, he was also on pre-trial release in Seminole County for trafficking cocaine and was issued a court-ordered ankle monitor.
Using the GPS on the ankle monitor, detectives were able to track Johnson leaving his address in Sanford, driving to the victim's home near the time of the shooting, and returning to Sanford the same day.
Johnson was arrested Thursday, November 5 and charged with attempted first-degree murder and shooting a weapon into a building, according to Seminole County Jail records.
Johnson is being held without bail at Seminole County jail.
