The newest addition to the Detroit Zoo is a 2-year-old giraffe.

Zara will become the fourth giraffe at the zoo, joining Mpenzi, Kivuli and Jabari. She arrived from the zoo in Peoria, Illinois, according to the announcement Monday (November 9).

Zara quarantined before meeting the other giraffes at the zoo, which is typical for new arrivals, according to a press release from the Detroit Zoo.

“We’re happy to welcome Zara to the herd,” Scott Carter, chief life sciences officer for the Detroit Zoological Society, said in the press release. “She has a very calm demeanor and seems eager to learn new things.”

“There is serious conservation concern with wild giraffe populations due to poaching, loss of habitat, and the effects of war and civil unrest across Africa,” Carter said in the release, which notes that the International Union for the Conservation of Nature deemed giraffes in danger of extinction in 2016. “We believe the giraffes at the Detroit Zoo are strong ambassadors for their cousins in the wild.”

The Detroit Zoo set up live stream videos of exhibits, including the North American river otters, penguins, giraffes, snow monkeys and prairie dogs. The giraffe live stream is available from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day.

The zoo is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in November, closing for Thanksgiving (November 26).
