A social worker from Mexia, Texas, is accused of registering residents at a living center to vote without their permission.
Kelly Reagan Brunner was charged with 134 "counts of purportedly acting as an agent and of election fraud," according to a statement by Ken Paxton, attorney general of Texas, on Friday.
Brunner allegedly submitted voter registration forms for 67 residents at the the Mexia State Supported Living Center, where she works, KWTX reported. The forms were completed without the residents' consent, and 16 of the residents are unable to vote because they were declared mentally incapacitated by the court system, the TV station found.
“Registering citizens to vote or to obtain mail ballots without their consent is illegal. It is particularly offensive when individuals purport to be champions for disability rights, when in reality they are abusing our most vulnerable citizens in order to gain access to their ballots and amplify their own political voice," said Paxton.
Under Texas law, only a parent, spouse, or child who is a "qualified voter" can register another person to vote with their consent.
Brunner was arrested on November 2 and has been released on a $35,000 bond. She faces up to 10 years in prison if found guilty.
