Officials with Mecklenburg County Health Department fear another coronavirus outbreak may be imminent after videos were posted online showing a crowded church in Charlotte. Few masks could be seen and social distancing was seemingly nonexistent.

Health Director Gibbie Harris said the department was told in advance that the Kingdom City Church Charlotte event would happen, and they addressed worries with the pastor prior to the services. Her fears escalated after seeing the videos circulating on social media.

"Yeah, we have concerns about what's going on out there," said Harris. "If they truly aren't social distancing and aren't masking, we have enough virus in our community to that it would be very unlikely that there's not at least one person out at that church who is infected."

The county is still dealing with the aftermath of the virus outbreak at Charlotte's United House of Prayer For All People. Harris had been optimistic that the reduction in new cases could mean the worst was behind them. On Tuesday, Gov. Roy Cooper announced indoor gatherings would be limited to 10 people after the number of cases continued to increase across the state; however, religious services are excluded from the order.

The convocation is set to continue until November 15. County health officials brought 500 masks to the church, along with signs encouraging social distancing, wearing a mask, and proper hygiene.

"At this point, we've done all we can," Harris said.
