Detroit’s first no-kill animal shelter is aiming to raise $1 million for its new headquarters, and another Michigan company will match donations up to $100,000 this month.
Grand Rapids-based Bissell Homecare Inc. is pitching in on the “Closer to Home” campaign to raise funds for the shelter’s second location, according to the Detroit News.
Detroit Dog Rescue, a nonprofit organization, was founded in 2011. It helps about 80 to 120 dogs at a given time, according to the organization.
"Every single day Detroit Dog Rescue are in the streets of Detroit helping residents, helping animals and we need a bigger space and it came down to we need to move into this building," Detroit Dog Rescue Executive Director Kristina Rinaldi said at a press conference Tuesday (November 10). “We’re very excited about the progress we’ve made. Our zoning has passed and we’re creating an architectural plan.”
Rinaldi explained that the Detroit Dog Rescue’s current location, the first no-kill shelter that opened in 2014, fills up quickly. So, when the Westcott Veterinary Care Center gave the rescue organization its former location, the Detroit Dog Rescue couldn’t turn it down, according to the Detroit News.
Now, they’ll need to fundraise to renovate the building.
Rinaldi said she hopes the new location will be operational “by this time next year.”
