The New Orleans Police officer who was shot last month is continuing to recover from his injuries, guided by support from his family and friends.

Officer Trevor Abney, a five-year veteran of NOPD, was ambushed in the French Quarter and shot in the face by a man in the back of a pedicab. He and his partner were in their police unit at the time; his partner wasn't shot but was injured by broken glass. He miraculously survived, but X-rays show the bullet went to his brain and is too dangerous to remove.

"He's still the same," said his brother, Shawn Abney. "He can walk, talk, he's eating, he still sounds like himself."

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the 32-year-old Iraq War veteran in his recovery. As of Wednesday, it has raised $27,350, far surpassing its goal.

"He's going to need it because these law enforcement officers, they just took a 10% pay cut and they're furloughed due to the times right now so it's tough enough to take a pay cut and then go through a tragedy like this," said Shawn.

Shawn said their family continues to pray for Trevor's recovery, but they are grateful to get more time with him.

"I tell him every day I love him now," he said. "You always tell yourself this isn't going to happen to us. We are beyond thankful to have him."
