The Dallas Police Department will be implementing new technology to identify officer misconduct. This new technology will be a warning system designed to track and identify officer misconduct.
The Dallas City Council approved the $907,000 contract on Wednesday, November 11th.
The Benchmark Analytics system will collect information on officers and use an algorithm to catch the first signs of potential behavioral problems.
Dallas Police Lt. Stephen Williams stated in an email to CBS DFW, "The goal is to be able to identify problematic behaviors and correct them before they become an issue."
Not everyone is in favor of the new technology.
Dallas Police Association President Mike Mata stated, "We already have an Internal Affairs Department. We already have a Citizens Review Board. We can look at every single complaint that comes through. So why do we need another third party to reinvent the wheel?"
Dallas Police believe that the software will help to ensure that no officer falls through the cracks.
Williams stated, "The current system we utilized is old and uses a threshold-based measurement system. The new system is research-based and uses a data-driven approach to its analysis."
Police Departments across the country from cities such as Nashville and Albuquerque are already using the technology.
