Days after being released from the hospital, former Louisiana Gov. Edwin Edwards was admitted back into the hospital. In a Facebook post, the 93-year-old's wife Trina Edwards said he is being treated for pneumonia at a Baton Rouge hospital.
"Edwin became very ill yesterday evening and was taken to the hospital by ambulance," said Trina Edwards. "He has pneumonia in both lungs and will be here for several days but we expect him to get better and be back home soon. Thank you all for your continued prayers."
Edwards was admitted to the hospital over the weekend as a precaution after he had experienced breathing problems Friday (November 13). He tested negative for COVID-19, which has been shown to severely impact elderly people, but was diagnosed with the common cold. He was released on Sunday, but by Tuesday was back at Our Lady of the Lake Medical Center.
Edwards served four terms as Louisiana governor, from 1972 to 1980, 1984 to 1988, and 1992 to 1996. In 2000, he was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for his role in a racketeering scheme involving state riverboat casino licenses, according to 4WWL. He was released in 2011 after serving eight years.
