Thanks to the help of the Audubon Coastal Wildlife Network and the Southeast Region Marine Mammal Stranding Network, two trapped dolphins were able to return to the sea. The mother and her calf were rescued in a Louisiana bayou near Grand Chenier earlier this month after they were displaced by flooding caused by Hurricane Laura.
"This rescue, along with other rescues associated with the aftermath of Hurricane Laura, would not have been possible without the collaborative efforts from partner organizations," said Gabriella Harlamert, Coordinator for Audubon Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Stranding, Rescue, and Rehab.
Before being released, the mother dolphin was satellite-tagged so scientists can monitor her movements and better understand how the mammals navigate the state's waters.
Flooding along the coast combined with storm surges can cause some marine animals to washed into waterways and become trapped. Since September, six bottlenose dolphins have been rescued after they were trapped by Laura's flooding, according to KPLC. If you come across a stranded marine animal, you can report it to Coastal Wildlife Network by calling 504-235-3005.
"We are thankful for the continue support of our partners and that we were able to positively impact marine life in Louisiana," said Harlamert.
