Cellphone video caught a physical altercation between a substitute teacher and a student at a South Florida high school.

Local 10 reported that the incident happened Monday (November 23) at Barbara Goleman Senior High School in Miami Lakes. A student at the school, Danny Echavarria, told reporters the student in the video had been asking to use the bathroom.

“Definitely crazy to see in math. Just trying to do my work, you know?” Echavarria said. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, school officials limited the number of students allowed in the bathroom at one time. The substitute teacher told the student to wait for a classmate to return.

“After waiting for a while, the kid just decided to walk out and the sub tried to stop him, and it just got into like a wrestle match,” Echavarria explained.

The video starts with the student trying to force his way out the door, and the teacher is blocking his path. The substitute can also be heard asking the student to go back to his seat. “You’re just a kid I don’t want to touch you. Go sit down,” the teacher is heard saying in the video. The student ignored the teacher's words and kept trying to leave.

The student then pushed the door open. That's when the substitute teacher grabbed him and started pulling him back. "The student then wraps his arms around the teacher’s neck. The two stumble into a podium that was just inside the classroom door, before the teacher slams the student onto the ground," reporters said.

Miami-Dade Schools sent Local 10 a statement about the video, which said, “We are conducting a thorough review of this incident. The temporary instructor will not be placed at any school pending the outcome of the investigation.” Officials also noted that the teacher has been a substitute with district for about two years with no disciplinary history.
