California Governor Gavin Newsom has announced he is considering reinstating a stay-at-home-order for most of the state as COVID-19 cases continue to surge across the United States.

The state has seen a rise in hospitalizations and ABC30 reports that ICU beds are about 75% full but are projected to reach capacity by mid-December to early January.

"If these trends continue, we're going to have to take much more dramatic, arguably drastic action," said Newsom.

These drastic actions include a possible stay-at-home order for counties in the purple tier.

Fresno County returned to the purple tier in mid-November.

San Francisco, San Mateo, Alpine, Inyo, Mariposa, and four other counties all moved to the purple tier over the Thanksgiving weekend.

That means zero California counties are currently in the least restrictive yellow tier and 51 of 58 counties are in the purple tier.

"This is in the absence of making better decisions," said Newsom of the ICU capacity projections. "This is a chart that says if we just sit back and we are bystanders at this moment, and we don't improve upon our existing efforts, this is what we project might occur."

Governor Newsom urged Californians to stay home as much as possible for the next few weeks.
