Utah's Mysterious Monolith Is Now Gone

The mysterious monolith in Moab, Utah, disappeared days after it was discovered.

The silver object was first discovered by a Utah Department of Public Safety pilot last week while searching for big horn sheep, and it became an international sensation because of how weird and unexplainable it was.

Bureau of Land Management confirmed that the mysterious object was removed on Friday, November 27. The agency also said the monolith was illegally installed.

While neither BLM or Utah DPS revealed the structure's location and only said that it was in a remote part of Utah. It didn't take long for others to find it though.

"I decided to go there first because I was drawn to the fact that this object had been there for five years, hidden in nature," said David Surber told the BBC. Surber shared the object's coordinates on Reddit and Instagram after finding its location on Google Maps.

Satellite images shows that the monolith has been up since 2016.

BLM wasn't too thrilled when the object's location was shared because it took adventure seekers to a site "which has not been developed for heavy visitation."

The agency said human waste and trash were left behind by visitors, and that parked cars damaged the area's vegetation.

Where the monolith came from and where it went is anyone's guess, but all that's left is a triangular imprint on the ground where it once stood.

"Many people have been enjoying the mystery and view it as a welcome distraction from the 2020 news cycle,” said Monticello Field Manager Amber Denton Johnson in a statement.
