Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is slated to give another COVID-19 update Thursday afternoon (December 3).

This briefing comes only two days after the last one, Local4 noted Thursday morning.

It also comes near the end of a three-week period of increased restrictions, which the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced would remain in effect through December 8. Those restrictions include a ban on indoor dining, among other closures, shut-downs and virtual alternatives.

The indoor dining ban recently sparked legal action and a call to action from Joe Vicari, whose group owns dozens of restaurants in Michigan.

Vicari called on other Michigan restaurant owners to band together to find ways to remain open during pandemic-related government orders.

Some health care professionals, however, cautioned that reopening too early would be “reckless” and could endanger the public.

Some have wondered whether the orders would be extended past December 8. Whitmer, Chief Medical Executive Dr. Joneigh Khaldun and others will discuss options based on data, according to Local4. Khaldun previously said the numbers have slowly moved in the right direction. Officials are “cautiously optimistic,” she said.

“At this point in time, it’s really too early to say precisely where we will be in a few days, much less next week,” Whitmer said. “But I think it’s important for people to know: We’ve not predetermined anything. It’s going to be driven by where we see the numbers.”
