A Nashville nurse was shot and killed as she drove to work on Thursday night (December 3). Police identified the victim on Friday as 26-year-old Caitlyn Marie Kaufman, a nurse at St. Thomas West Hospital.

Kaufman was driving along Interstate 440 when someone fired shots into her vehicle between 6 and 6:30 p.m. around the Hillsboro Road and West End exits. She was on her way to begin a 7 p.m. shift at St. Thomas West.

According to Metro Nashville Police, a Metro Parks officer discovered a gray Mazda CX-5 SUV in the westbound lanes around 8:50 p.m. When the officer attempted to provide help to who was thought to be a victim of a car crash, they saw bullets had been fired into the vehicle. The officer called for backup, but Kaufman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The road was closed to traffic for hours as investigators processed the scene, but it was reopened around 3 a.m.

As of noon Friday, no arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Police ask that witnesses or anyone with information regarding the incident call the department. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 615-74-CRIME.
