The mother of Daisy Coleman, one of the teenage girls featured in the Netflix documentary, Audrie & Daisy, about her rape as a teen, has died by suicide.
On Sunday (December 6), Melina Coleman was found dead at her home at the age of 58, according to SafeBAE, the sexual assault prevention and recovery organization co-founded by Daisy following her rape case. The suicide comes just four months since Daisy took her own life. She is survived by her two sons, Logan and Charlie. In a statement, the group said it’s in "shock and disbelief" over the news. "The bottomless grief of losing her husband, Tristan and Daisy was more than she could face most days," the organization said, adding that Melinda was a "gifted veterinarian, devoted mother and wife, and talented body builder."
Daisy took her own life in August and was discovered after Melinda called the authorities to do a welfare check. She was 23. "She was my best friend and amazing daughter. I think she had to make it seem like I could live without her. I can’t," Melinda wrote at the time. "I wish I could have taken the pain from her!"
In the 2016 doc, Audie & Daisy, Daisy recalled her experience being a 14-years-old raped in the small town of Maryville, Missouri. The assault allegedly took place in January 2012 at a house party and saw Daisy accuse Matthew Barnett of the assault. Nobody was every convicted for the crime. In the film, viewers follow the family as they dealt with the aftermath of the alleged assault and the reaction from their community.
