A recent Wallethub study compared more than 400 cities in the United States of varying sizes to determine the best college towns and cities in the nation.

There were several Arizona cities that made the cut.

Scottsdale came in tenth place and was the highest-ranking city overall from Arizona. The city placed third overall for 'academic and economic opportunities'.

Here are the other cities in Arizona that placed in the top 100:

  • Chandler- 24
  • Tempe- 28
  • Mesa- 36
  • Gilbert 37
  • Peoria- 38
  • Tucson- 53

Mesa placed seventh overall for all of the largest college cities, while Tucson came in 11th for this category.

Scottsdale was third overall for midsize cities. Chandler places eighth in this category, and Tempe came in tenth.

To determine the list, Wallethub compared 415 cities across three key dimensions: wallet friendliness, social environment, and academic and economic opportunities.

Each of the three key dimensions were then evaluated using 30 relevant metrics including housing costs, student loan debt per person, students per capita, number of attractions, entrepreneurial activity, and earning potential for college graduates.
