New England residents may be able to see the northern lights on Wednesday night.
The area is reportedly expected to see it cloudy skies clear late in the evening, which will make the natural light display visible, WCVB reports. A recent solar flare is expected to make aurora borealis visible, specifically in areas north of the Massachusetts Turnpike.
"We have a chance of seeing the northern lights here at our latitude, particularly north of the (Mass Pike)," said StormTeam 5 meteorologist Cindy Fitzgibbon.
WCVB reports the aurora will be most visible in New England between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m.
"Check it out if you're up at that hour. You want to get away from any light pollution and look to the north," Fitzgibbon said.
The aurora borealis is a natural light display caused by electrons colliding with the Earth's atmosphere near the North Pole, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association.
The National Weather Service in Cleveland, Ohio initially shared news of speculation around a potential solar storm heading toward the United States this week, which showed a map showing locations where the northern lights may be visible, including the New England area.
