The National Museum of African American Music (NMAAM) has announced its scheduled grand opening in Nashville.
The 56,000 square foot facility will open to the public on January 18, 2021 to coincide with Martin Luther King Jr. Day, NewsChannel 5 reports. The museum is part of a development project that is more than 22 years in the making, according to museum president and CEO Henry Hicks.
Hicks told NewsChannel 5 that the museum will undergo some finishing touches in the next few weeks, but ultimately will be ready for its grand opening next month and will offer displays and aims to connect visitors from all generations and walks of life.
“Nashville is Music City and that really got its start with the Fisk Jubilee Singers. It evolved through an era of R&B and jazz being very prominent in the city and of course country music and I think the city has a job of embracing that country or Music City heritage," Hicks said via NewsChannel 5. "This museum just really builds upon that.”
NMAAM members will be granted early access to the museum one week prior to its January 18, 2021 grand opening. The museum will follow restrictions set by the Nashville Health Department in an effort to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.
