The missing pilot of the F-16 fighter jet that crashed in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan on Tuesday night (December 8) was found dead Thursday (December 10), the Wisconsin Air National Guard confirmed.

The pilot was the only occupant of the aircraft.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time,” 115th Fighter Wing commander Col. Bart Van Roo said in a statement. “Today is a day for mourning, and the 115th Fighter Wing along with the entire dWisconsin National Guard stands with the pilot’s family as we grieve the loss of a great Airman, and patriot.”

The F-16 was assigned at the 115th Fighter Wing at Truax Field Air National Guard Base in Madison.

The crash happened during a routine training mission, though the cause remains unknown.

The 115th Fighter Wing will not identify the pilot until 24 hours after notifying next of kin, according to its announcement Thursday.

“The 115th Fighter Wing is appreciative of the community support provided to its members and will release additional details as they become available,” the statement reads. “The 115th Fighter Wing will provide another update early Friday morning (December 11).”
